I had a really easy time in Vancouver!
I just got my stamping done on 11th Sep 07!
There were moderate amount of people, and I was second in the line. I had my interview at 8am, but arrived there by 7.10am. They start the security checking from 7.30am onwards and start letting you in. Since there are 2 doors of security check before you go in.
If you have an appt at 9am and you have to get the Scotia deposit slip stamped, you can still go and do it!! Just let the security guy know about it. There were lots of people who didn’t know that the Consulate doesn’t take cash anymore... And they are very lenient with this. The Scotia bank is just a min away from the Consulate. So you can get the (3) deposit slips stamped and be back! There is nothing called getting late for the interview!!
Very few questions asked in the main interview itself. As everyone has said; I guess these are their standard questions; what would be your position? What does your company do?
Just make sure you have the right papers.
The only papers they really check are;
I-797,
Employment offer letter,
Passport, and
DS-156/DS157.
But be cautious and always carry all your papers! You can leave your bag/cell phone at an Asian Lotto shop just opposite the Starbucks for $2 instead of the "Good Fellas café" for $5!
Remember it’s the same procedure for collecting passport too! You cannot take cell phone/bags etc inside!
Everyone who was along with me in the line for the interview or for collecting the passport were getting their passport back only 1 day after the interview.
But I was extremely lucky that I got my passport back the same day!! I haven’t heard of anyone since July 07 that anyone has got the passport back the same day!
These people at the US Consulate in Vancouver are very friendly!
I had a few minor errors on my 1-94 card, and also on my I-797. My employer had a company name change and the petition was issued with the old company name. No questions were asked and it was understood that name changes are common.
Also, on my I-94 card, the country of citizenship was printed wrong. But the border security was very helpful, and simply asked me to simply fill out a new I-94 which sorted the problem.
Remember the most important thing is to be HONEST!! Never lie about anything!! Or try to be smart. If you may have to stand in a line for longer time do it! But just be Honest!
